Indian Committee to Solve Issue of Undisclosed Synthetic Diamond
Many of the gem and jewellery industry associations in India have joined together to form a committee which will tackle the problem of lab-grown diamonds which are not disclosed as being synthetic. The members of the committee come from All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF), the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the Mumbai Diamond Merchants Association (MDMA) and the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB). The grading laboratories will also provide input to the committee.

The chairman of the GJEPC, Rajiv Jain, said that the committee has members which are exporters, importers, and domestic dealers. He said that this was necessary so that action can be taken if goods are not correctly disclosed as being lab grown. There is no issue if the goods are labeled as synthetic. However, if there is someone who is trying to deceive a buyer, the committee will handle the situation.

There has been concern recently that some synthetic stones may have entered the market. This is -because hundreds of man-made diamonds were submitted to the grading laboratories in India, China, and Belgium to be certified as natural diamonds.
