Gagan Narang Wins Bronze for India in 2012 Olympics
Gagan Narang, an ace marksman, won the bronze medal for India on 30 July. Abhinav Bindra was not able to make it past preliminaries but that did not slow deter Gagan from earning the bronze with his marksmanship.

The finale had 8 men all vying to win a medal. Wang Tao of China was the rival to beat in order to get the third place and win a medal. Gagan, a 29-year-old Punjabi from Hyderadad was able to keep his nerves from getting the better of him and fought back from behind with a perfect 100 in the fourth series by getting two more 100s in the last two of his rounds. Narang is also set to compete in the 50m rifle prone events.

Narang’s victory was the first for India on the third day of completion in the Olympics. It has helped to lift the spirits of the Indian Olympians who were shocked by the elimination of Bindra in the qualification rounds. Bindra made history four years ago when the Olympics were in Beijing when he won the gold medal for the men’s 10m air rifle event. That was the first time an individual Indian had won a title in the Olympics.

This year, perhaps there will be more Indian Olympians to win bronze, silver, or even gold. Now most of us will never have the opportunity to win gold at the Olympics.
